A scenic ride through Badlands National Park was another South Dakota highlight.

The town of Scenic, South Dakota, where we had a picnic stop, was like the setting from an old western movie.

Cottonwood, South Dakota, with a population of 12, was the smallest town we rode through on the trip.

Week 5 began with a tranquil ride along the Missouri River.

The residents at the nursing home that we stopped at along the way to Watertown, SD enjoyed hearing all about our biking adventure.

Allthough the terrain of Minnesota was relatively flat, cycling was made more difficult by strong headwinds. At least Mother Nature was kind enough to provide lots of sunshine - it only rained a few days on the entire trip.

Mail from loved ones full of encouragment and support helped combat homesickness - here's one that Sue received in Montevideo, MN.

The vast display of sunflowers was a nice change from all of the corn and hay fields that we were accustomed to seeing.

The end of week 5 brought us to the small midwest town of Northfield, Minnesota where locals foiled a Jesse James bank robbery at the First National Bank.
